If you’re getting emails you don’t want in your Gmail inbox, you can block or unsubscribe from the sender, or report the message to Gmail.

Important: If someone uses Gmail to harass, intimidate, or threaten you, they're violating Gmail's Program Policies. If you feel that you're in danger, contact your local authorities right away, and ask whether any cyber harassment laws apply to your situation.

Block an email address

When you block a sender, messages they send you go to Spam.

  1. On your mobile device, open the Gmail app.

  2. Open the message.

  3. In the top right of the message, click More.

  4. Click Block [sender].

Tip: If you blocked someone by mistake, you can unblock them using the same steps

Unsubscribe from mass emails

If you signed up on a site that sends lots of emails, like promotions or newsletters, you can use the unsubscribe link to stop getting these emails. After you unsubscribe, it may take a few days for the mailing list to stop sending you messages.

  1. On your mobile device, open the Gmail app.

  2. Open an email from the sender you want to unsubscribe from.

  3. Next to the sender's name, click Unsubscribe.

  4. In the pop-up, click Unsubscribe.

    1. Some senders may require you to click Go to website to unsubscribe from their emails.

  5. Optional: Once you’ve unsubscribed, in the banner, click Move to spam.

Tips:

  • You can also unsubscribe when viewing your list of emails. To unsubscribe, hover over an email and click Unsubscribe.

  • When you unsubscribe, instead of the sender’s name, you may find a unique identifier for a mailing list or a list ID.

To stop unsubscribe recommendations:

  1. On your mobile device, open the Gmail app.

  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings.

  3. Select your email address.

  4. Under "Inbox Tips," tap Inbox Tips settings.

  5. Next to "Unsubscribe tips," uncheck the box.

Remove spam or suspicious emails

Remove & block spam from your inbox

Gmail tries to keep spam out of your inbox, but sometimes messages get through. If you get a spam message in your inbox:

  1. On your mobile device, open the Gmail app.

  2. Tap the letter or photo to the left of the message, or open the message.

  3. In the top right, tap More.

  4. Near the top of the page, click Report spam.

Tip: When you click Report spam or manually move an email into your Spam folder, Google will receive a copy of the email and may analyze it to help protect our users from spam and abuse.

Report a suspicious email that asks for your personal information

If you find a suspicious email that asks for personal information, you can report the email for phishing.

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.

  2. Open the email you want.

  3. At the top right, click More.

  4. Click Report phishing.
